A very rare and unusual antique miniature Rye pottery figure of a Sussex Pig decorated in mottled brown glazes with a removable head. The pig is in exceptional condition the head resting on a wooden peg with shaped haunches which allow the vessel to be stood upright and to be used as a drinking vessel, the head forming a cup which rests on the flat nose. The pottery pig was made at the Belle-Vue Pottery, Rye and has an X mark incised inside the head with a further X mark to the top edge of the body. The X inside the head incorporates the letters R.S.W. (albeit barely visible) for Rustic Sussex Ware as recorded as used by the pottery. We have seen larger examples of the Sussex Pig in the same style and colouring, however, these smaller examples are very rare particularly in such fine condition.
