An antique carved box from Chaozhou city, in Guangdong, China. The black and gold colours, as well as the bulbous designs on the front are all distinct characteristics of Chaozhou designs. The main carvings on the doors feature a pair of phoenix, and the carvings on the rest of the panels are motifs of flowers and vines. This was used either as a Buddha’s niche or for one’s ancestral tablet, the tablet would be placed inside for praying and offering. The paintings on the doors as well as the small brass handles are original. The top of this box measures 33x17cm, the width of the widest part is 34cm. The material used was Pine wood, and the carvings were made of Camphor wood.
