Originating from Russia between 1880-1890, this antique traditional Kuba rug features a unique interpretation of distinct oriental symbols. Hand knotted in high-quality wool, the field design portrays a series of perfectly mirrored Canavar Ayagi, or monster’s feet, used to represent the dragon and power in antiquity; depicted in tribal red, blue, and black colourways against a beige background. Contained within several complementary borders (including the innermost black border with seldom-seen variations of the Goz protective eye symbol), it is uncommon to see the Canavar Ayagi as the primary motif in any era without accenting another symbol, further contributing to the rarity of this piece in a collection.
