Vintage Mid 20th century dated modernist lithograph (not offset) poster by the listed French artist Jules Pascin (Bulgaria/France 1885-1930).. The poster promotes one of his shows and depicts a pair of nude young women. Printed in France on one side only. Slight tear on upper right edge. Dimensions:19.5″ x 27.5″.

Julius Mordecai Pincas (Bulgaria/France 1885-1930), known as Pascin, Jules Pascin, also known as the “Prince of Montparnasse”, was a Bulgarian artist of the School of Paris, known for his paintings and drawings. He later became an American citizen. His most frequent subject was women, depicted in casual poses, usually nude or partly dressed. Pascin was educated in Vienna and Munich.

A little perfume trivia: According to our pals at Wikipedia, “The word perfume is used today to describe scented mixtures and is derived from the Latin word, “per fumus,” meaning through smoke. Perfume was refined by the Romans, the Persians and the Arabs. Although perfume and perfumery also existed in East Asia, much of its fragrances were incense based.”

The poster entices people to buy mom some perfume as a celebration of Mother’s Day.
Unlined and ready to be framed, it is in good condition overall with some folds and signs of aging (please see photos).

About this poster: This vintage exhibition poster was produced for a show of Jasper Johns’s work in Minnesota in 1981.

According to his biography, in the 1950s “As the art world was searching for new ideas, outside the purely abstract style, the early paintings of maps and flags which Jasper Johns created, took in both praise and ridicule by certain critics in the art world. The early works he created, had a sense of craft work, and a small expression of the extra-ordinary and absurd. The process to create the images, were the meanings were found. Much of the work Jasper Johns created, was extremely new to the museum goers and art lovers, as the simple form of designing flags, and large numbers in print, was something which was never seen before. The distinct style, and the simplicity behind it, eventually captured the interest of museum goers. […] Together with Rauschenberg and several Abstract Expressionist painters of the previous generation, Jackson Pollock, Willem de Kooning, and Barnett Newman, Johns is one of most significant and influential American painters of the twentieth century. He also ranks with Durer, Rembrandt, Goya, Edvard Munch, and Picasso as one of the greatest printmakers of any era. Here is a lovely and lively framed print after Henri Matisse titled ‘1001 Nuits’ in French. It is a collage that represents the story of Scheherazade, the main protagonist and storyteller from the aforementioned story which is referred to as “Arabian Nights” in English. In the composition is the phrase “elle vit apparaitre le matin, elle se tut discrètement” which loosely translates into English as “as dawn approached, she discreetly fell silent.”

During the last decade of his life, when he could no longer paint due to physical limitations, Matisse began to create colorful and expressive collages (decoupage) using cut paper to represent abstract shapes, figures, animals and plants. Before cutting the forms, the paper was pre-painted w/ gouache by his assistants then he would cut the random, unplanned forms and arrange them on a modestly-sized white medium such as this example.

As he kept working, those compositions eventually morphed into room-sized works. These works were referred to as his “cut-outs”. The print and frame appear to be the original from the 1960’s. The original collage painting from which the prints are inspired actually measured roughly 4.5 feet high x 12 feet long.

This piece could look great over a deeply moody wall color or perhaps even a plant-themed wallpaper.
