This exceptional antique Burmese silver bowl has a circular shaped, rounded form with a flared undulating upper portion.

The surface of the bowl is embellished with fine scenes of embossed and chased decoration depicting a series of iconic Burmese figures in high relief, each bearing the features of an animal.

As with the vast majority of these bowls, the continuous frieze of figures relates to Burmese folklore.

The scenic ornamentation to this antique Burmese silver bowl is amidst scrolling borders accented with a vertebrate band of foliate and floral ornamentation to the upper portion.

The bowl is supported by a plain tapering collet style foot embellished with an engraved undulating vine and leaf decorated border.

The interior of this impressive example of antique silverware retains the original gilding; this has worn with age in a sympathetic fashion to an aesthetically pleasing mellow color.

Condition
This antique Burmese silver bowl is an exceptional gauge of silver, exceptional quality and in excellent condition. The embossed and chased decoration is very sharp. There are no hallmarks as to be expected with such a piece; the date and origin can be determined by the composition and decoration.

It showcases three panels with floral pattern on a dramatic gold background with shishi lions strolling. The panels are set against a stunning cobalt blue background adorned with generous gold details. The three small circles around the rim showcase plum blossom, pine and bamboo patterns, together they create a stunning auspicious “sho-Chiku-bai”. This stunning contrast creates a beautiful scene that invite the viewer to get closer to explore the details. The reverse side is decorated with underglaze cobalt blue hand-painting with the artist signature at the center.

The late father of the collector of this exquisite pair, who operated one of the leading kilns in the historic Imari-Arita region of Japan, travelled extensively to Europe in the early 1960s with a mission that he led, to purchase and bring back to Japan antique ceramics that had been exported from Japan to the west over the past 250 years. A total of 104 pieces were acquired and brought back. These were very unique pieces, designed and produced to export to Europe and later to America too, mostly in the 18th up to very early 20th century. These were carefully studied and extensively copied in the hope of creating products that conformed with the long-standing tastes and preferences in the west and bringing back the glory of that era. He concentrated on purchasing massive masterpieces that originated from his region of Imari-Arita. Records show that the mission did a considerable portion of its buying in London. All the 104 pieces have been in his museum quality private collection. This pair of Meiji porcelain vases is among these 104 exceptional and unique pieces.
