A wonderfully decorative set of five faux bamboo frames with original mirrors, made in france in the mid 19th century. The frames (typically fruitwood), are turned to mimic bamboo, and look fabulous especially when grouped together. As these are pieces of folk art, no two pieces are exactly the same. There are two near pairs, and one smaller frame, all with foxing to the glass and with period chains. At least two of the frames have mercury glass, as they have an obvious ‘wobble’ to the mirror. Mirror makers stopped using mercury in the 1840s, instead switching to silver nitrate, which is how mirrors are made to date.
in very good period condition with a lovely patina, no repairs, just simply lightly polished and ready to hang.
