Wedgwood black basalt bust of George Stephenson, dated 1872. Finely modelled by Edward William Wyon, as the ‘Father of Railways’, and inventor of ‘Stephensons Rocket’ wearing Classical robes.
\nSet upon its original black basalt socle.
\nImpressed marks WEDGWOOD, titled STEPHENSON, and E.W.Wyon F(ecit).
\nDate code for 1872.
\nHeight – 37 cm, 14 5\/8”.
\nWidth – 24.2 cm, 9 1\/2”.
\nDepth – 16 cm, 6 1\/4”.
\nCondition – Excellent. No damage. No restoration.
\nThis fine bust brings together three of the great names in British industry and art. The engineer George Stephenson, regarded globally as the Father of Railways, designer of Stephensons Rocket and the ‘Standard gauge’, used by most of the Worlds railways; he was also responsible for the World first inter city railway line, linking Liverpool to Manchester.
