“Bulldog Bank” American, circa 1880 Cast Iron Mechanical Bank

Place a coin on the nose of the dog; gently push down on the tail—this will cause the mouth to open; the coin will drop into the mouth swallowing the deposit. Coins are removed by twisting the round original coin trap on the underneath see image).

It is very important for the tail to be original as it was most vulnerable. This particular example is in excellent condition and all original in every aspect; maintaining a copious amount of paint with no touch up and no restoration of any kind. The bank has an excellent patina and is in the upper echelon examples of condition for this bank. “Bulldog Bank” displays beautifully and is a wonderful and authentic article of Americana, much sought after by collectors.
There are many reproductions; it is important that the base length be 5 9/16″ long, since fakes were cast from original banks, and original banks were cast from an original pattern.
